Mother, teen son severely burned in Conroe house fire

CONROE, Texas – A mother and her teenage son were hospitalized with life-threatening burns Monday after their mobile home caught fire in Montgomery County.

The fire, originally reported by a neighbor, broke out just before 3 a.m. in a mobile home park in the 9100 block of Oak Arbor Drive near FM 1488 in Conroe. The fire had started on the porch and went on to destroy the home, the fire marshal said.

The Needham Fire Department said the Montgomery County Hospital District took Barbara Aguirre, 46, and her 13-year-old son, Alfonso Aguirre, to Memorial Hermann hospital with severe burns on their upper bodies.

Barbara Aguirre is undergoing treatment for first- and second-degree burns at the Memorial Hermann Burn Center in the Houston Medical Center.

Alfonso Aguirre is being treated for first- and second-degree burns across half his body at the Shriner’s Burn Center in Galveston. Doctors said the teen’s condition is steadily improving.

Officials said the woman has two other teenage children, who were asleep when the fire broke out. There have been no reports that any of them were injured. Her husband was at work at the time of the fire.

According to investigators, there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
