HOUSTON -

Charges have been filed against a suspected drunken driver after a woman who survived a car crash in north Houston was killed in another accident moments after the initial crash.

Officials said the first accident happened around 2 a.m. Sunday on the North Loop near the North Freeway. Police said the 21-year-old woman was taking the exit ramp when she lost control of her car and crashed into a barricade.

Police said the woman got out of her Chevy Impala and stood in a lane on the freeway.

According to officers, another driver noticed the woman, stopped, and tried to convince her to get back in the car because it was not safe, but the woman refused.

Moments later, police said the driver of a Kia hit the Impala, which then hit the woman. The woman died at the scene. The witness who tried to help the woman was not injured.

Houston police identified Richard Arroyo, 24, as the driver of the Kia. He was questioned at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated.

The victim's name was not immediately released.
