HOUSTON -

A minor traffic accident turned violent when the hit and run driver started shooting. Just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning, Houston police responded to the 9500 block of Beechnut and found a woman shot in the chest.

Martin Martinez lives in the area and said the sound of gunfire is something he is used to hearing in the neighborhood.

"There is something going on here, not every day, but every once in a while," said Martinez. "But for something like this to happen, it is kind of different, but we do hear about this a lot."

Police said the woman was a passenger in an SUV that was involved in a minor crash earlier in the night. The driver who caused that crash sped away from the scene so the driver of the SUV followed for a few blocks, trying to get his information. They pulled into a strip center and the driver at fault in the collision got out of his car and fired one shot into the SUV.

"It is kind of shocking because he tried to do a good thing by trying to get the license plate, and for him to come out like that and shoot, it is terrible," said Martinez.

The woman who was the passenger was hit in the chest. She was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Witnesses said the suspect fled the scene in a black Chevy SUV with minor front end damage.

Anyone with any information on that vehicle is asked to call Houston Police Department.
