Dozens of Houston gas stations short-changing drivers, report says

HOUSTON – Have you ever filled up your tank at the gas station and think you may be getting shorted?

Well, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture, you may have been right if you've visited one of many stations in the Houston area on a new list.

"I've seen that happen when I've been fueling my vehicle over the many years that I've been driving, that they don't always go back to zero," driver Barbara Shook said.

Inspectors found about three dozen gas stations in the Houston metro area with problems at the pump, including not dispensing what was advertised.

According to the report, the Chevron on West Little York on the north side was shorting drivers with the amount actually pumped.

A few miles away, a station on Wayside Drive was shorting drivers as well.

"They don't always reset properly," Shook said.

A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture said when an inspector finds a problem, they tell the owner, cover the pump and the owner is supposed to make corrections.

If the same problem is present during a second inspection 45 days later, a citation can be issued.
