Woman leads police on chase in stolen ambulance

HOUSTON – A woman was arrested after leading police on a chase through Houston in a stolen ambulance Wednesday.

Just before midnight, police received a call from the Houston Fire Department that one of their ambulances had been stolen from the fire station and they did not know how long it had been gone. Using GPS tracking, the ambulance was found in the Heights area on 11th and Hempstead. Police said the driver, Latosha Patrice Harris, 28, refused to stop and led them on a chase to downtown that ended on Smith and Congress after she surrendered.

Officers said she first claimed to be trying to get away from an abusive boyfriend, and the ambulance was the closest vehicle she could find. According to the police report, Harris, originally from California, had been in Houston for three weeks and needed to get back to California but didn’t have money for transportation.

She was arrested and charged with felony evading and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
