HOUSTON – A man wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend turned himself in to Houston Police late Tuesday evening.

He is due to make his first court appearance Wednesday morning.

Mitchell was reportedly not cooperating with investigators. Sources said he had not given them a statement and had not handed over the weapon police believe he used in the crime.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Gulf Coast Arms apartments in the 6300 block of Hirsch. Police said Mitchell knocked on the door of the apartment of Lakeisha Lewis, 23, and when she opened it, Mitchell started shooting, killing her and Johnel Francis, 24, who was inside the apartment.

"When the officers entered the apartment they found a deceased female and an injured male. The male was transported to the hospital,” HPD Homicide Detective Mike Perez said.

Investigators said Francis and Lewis were found on the bathroom floor. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. Francis, who was found unconscious was taken to an area hospital, where he later died, family members said.

According to police, Mitchell and Lewis were in an on-again, off-again relationship for about six years and have three children together, ages 5, 3 and 1. They believe Mitchell may have been jealous over Lewis' new boyfriend, who they believe was the man shot inside the apartment.

The three children were not home at the time, investigators said.
