Spring woman interrupts burglary of her home

SPRING, Texas – A family in Spring received quite the scare Saturday after returning home from running errands.

"You have no permission to be in my house," Monica Mares said as she recounted seeing a car parked in her driveway and heard someone inside her house.

"When I walked up, my backdoor was open," she said.

At first, Mares said she thought the car belonged to a friend. However, after walking up to her home she said something didn't feel right.

"I did not feel comfortable so I walked out. Went to get into my car," she said.

Mares said she then called police and noticed two men.

"A black gentleman and a white heavy-set gentleman with long hair in a ponytail came running from my bedroom window in front of my house."

One man, she said, had a gun.

As for who they are, Mares isn't sure, but she suspects a piece of mail might offer a clue.

"There was a blank envelope and inside it had an envelope that said 'we love you' on it with three Renaissance tickets in it."

Mares suspects whoever broke into her house used the tickets to keep her away, but she didn't go to the festival.

Instead, she said, she caught two burglars in the act.

"Your home should be your safe bound. Somewhere you can feel safe. Somewhere you can relax. And I can't feel like that anymore," she said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the burglary.
