HOUSTON – A memorial of balloons and candles is growing near the intersection of Waugh and W. Gray streets to show support to a woman who was hit by a car while riding her bicycle home from work Sunday night.
Chelsea Norman, 24, worked at the Whole Foods on Waugh and clocked out at 10:17 p.m., according to her boyfriend Larry Villalobos. He said she then headed home.
The accident happened sometime between 10:20 and 10:30 p.m.
"It's a six-minute bike ride, max," Villalobo said. "She rode her bike quite a bit. She actually had a car but she lived so close and was a very 'green' person. It's a waste of gas to drive five minutes."
Villalobos told Local 2 that Norman was riding in the bike lane on Waugh, she wasn't wearing a helmet when she was hit.
The driver of the car who hit her kept going.
Two people who saw Norman lying in the street stopped a few minutes later and dialed 911. She sustained a severe head injury and was rushed to the hospital but died a couple of days later.
"Chelsea was a sweet, free spirited girl who didn't deserve this," Villalobos said.
Villalobos was waiting at Norman's apartment for her to come home when he received a call from her cell phone; it was the police at the scene.
"I wasn't expecting anything or thinking anything like that until I got a call from her cell phone. The cops called," he said.
The police are investigating and Norman's family and friends are hoping the driver of the car will be caught.
"Whoever did that, I think, should be brought to justice," Villalobos said.
