Woman hides in bedroom during home invasion

ATASCOCITA, Texas – A woman is recovering after she said someone broke into her home while she was inside.

The victim, Michelle, said as long as the criminal is out there, she's too scared to give her last name.

Michelle said she returned to her home in Atascocita on Thursday from working the night shift. She said she laid down for a nap around 10:30 a.m., which is when she was startled awake by a noise inside her home.

"I jumped out of my bed, came around the corner and saw somebody grabbing my laptop off the couch," Michelle said.

She quickly went back into the bedroom, closed the door and called loved ones and the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators believe the thief kicked in the front door. He got in and out of the house in only a matter of minutes, investigators said.

Michelle said one thing the crook did while he was inside her home has her worried.

"He dropped his cellphone. That's even worse. Maybe he did hear me and he was in such a rush and dropped his phone," Michelle said.

Michelle said she never saw the thief's face. She said investigators told her they had another report of the same type of home invasion that same morning.

"I think it was random, but I would feel better knowing there is one less criminal out on the street," Michelle said.

Michelle and her husband are getting their front door repaired and taking steps to better secure their home. As frightened as she was to be all alone with a dangerous criminal in the house, she said she's relieved that he left when he did.

"I'm just thankful for my life. That's just a laptop. My life is the only one," Michelle said.

In the meantime, deputies said they will continue patrolling the neighborhood so they can hopefully put a stop to the break-ins and arrest whoever is responsible.
