Woman, baby plucked from tree in high-water rescue

Bexar County deputy, good Samaritan rescue pair

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A woman and her 1-year-old baby were rescued from high water Wednesday morning by a Bexar County sheriff's deputy and a good Samaritan after the woman's car was swept away.

The rescue took place around 8:30 a.m. in far West Bexar County in the 7600 block of Cagnon Road, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said.

BCSO spokeswoman Rosanne Hughes said Deputy Jason Jarvis was on his way to work in his personal vehicle and heard the call on the radio scanner.

He drove to the scene and, with the help of a worker from a nearby plan nursery, swam into the water to get the woman, who was clinging to a tree, holding the child in her arms.

Hughes said the woman was not familiar with the area and didn't realize that the water was so high when she tried to drive through it. Her SUV was swept away in rising water from the Medina River.

The woman and the child were taken to the hospital to be checked out. Jarvis said the baby was cold and shivering from being in the water.

The woman told the deputy that she drove from the other side of Cagnon Road, where the gate was not closed. A gate on the other side of the road from which KSAT 12 crews approached was closed Wednesday morning. Hughes said the Sheriff's Office is investigating whether the gate was open, as the woman said.

A law enforcement helicopter was flying over the scene Wednesday morning looking for the SUV.
