A woman was attacked and sexually assaulted by a man while walking her dog in the Montrose area.

Walking your dog seems simple and safe enough and it usually is for most everyone in this neighborhood just off of Shepherd near Westheimer in Montrose.  But that was not the case for a 29-year-old woman at about 4 in the afternoon in the 2000 block of Elmen on Dec. 3.

Houston police say she was walking along when a man came up from behind and grabbed her.  Police said the attacker dragged her into an abandoned building and raped her.

"I'm shocked. There are so many people usually out during the day walking their dogs and stuff like that and it's very surprising to hear that right here in this area," said resident Lee Arellano.

Just the sound of that crime terrifies people who live here and also walk their dogs that they see as added security.

"Keep 'em around. Keep 'em closer. When I first moved to this area 25 years ago and got broken into, because I had an hold house.  Police said get dogs," Arellano said.

Police say the attacker stood about 5 foot 10 and was about 35 years old.  Otherwise, they are releasing little information.

Houston police say their Special Crimes Unit is now working on this case.
