HOUSTON -

Authorities said murder charges have been filed in the the shooting death of a man who was killed in front of kids who were playing outside a northeast Houston apartment complex.

That shooting happened just before 4 p.m. Sunday at an apartment complex on Mesa Drive near Sterlingshire Street.

Investigators said the victim, identified as 36-year-old Donnell Williams, was shot and killed in front of the complex's laundry room.

Witnesses said they heard two men arguing before hearing the single gunshot that ended the man's life.

"From what I heard, they were arguing over drugs and then the one guy had strangled him or whatever and started to choke him and then shot him," said Melissa Mullins, who lives at the complex.

Further investigation by Houston police identified Astroroid Dewayne Benton, 32, as the suspect in this case. Benton, who lives at the apartment complex, was arrested on Thursday without incident.
