ATASCOCITA, Texas – Temperatures in the Houston area dropped into the 40s Monday, and a KPRC Local 2 crew spotted a winter treat falling in the sky.
A sleet/snow drizzle was spotted near Atascocita and Wilson Roads about 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Those who live on nearby Evening Shades at 12th Fairway Lane in the Atascocita Pinehurst neighborhood hoped more snow would fall to add to their Christmas display. Each home on the cul de sac was decorated with thousands of lights.
"We'll be hoping for some by December 25th," said Kim Humlick.
Humlick said neighbors love the display.
"It's the same people that come back year after year after year. We even have one little girl who chases the train every night," she added.
The lights on Evening Shades Court are on from 6 to 9 p.m. each night.
Unfortunately for the Christmas display, the mixture failed to stick.
"As it hits your skin, it doesn't even feel wet," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Frank Billingsley said. "It is kind of a snowy mixture."
Billingsley said he could not find the precipitation on radar.
"The temperatures don't really support snow, but a picture is worth a thousand temperatures," Billingsley said.
In the Houston area, a cold rain fell Monday, dropping 1 to 2 inches.
Unfortunately, it is not enough to get the area out of the drought. The rainfall deficit for Houston's Bush airport is 25 inches, but every little bit helps.
It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in Texas.
In West Texas, places like Abilene got a good dusting of snow Monday.
Even up in North Texas, snow fell early Monday morning in Decatur, sticking to grassy areas but melting on roads.
In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, instead of snowflakes the storm brought folks a cold rain.
Texans all over the Lone Star state from the Panhandle, West Texas to down home in Southeast Texas are bundling up in our winter-like weather.
The KPRC Local 2 Severe Weather Team said Houstonians should expect cold conditions this week, so folks will need their winter coats and gloves to stay warm outside.
