Wife admits to deadly Christmas shooting of husband, deputies say

73-year-old woman allegedly cited ongoing marital problems

SAN LEON, Texas – A woman is charged with murder after she told 911 operators she shot her husband early Christmas morning.

Deputies said Gwendolyn Bailey, 73, said she shot her husband, William Franklin Bailey, 52, because of ongoing marital problems.

Authorities found the man lying on the front porch of the couple’s home on Avenue K in San Leon with multiple gunshot wounds. He later died from his injuries.

A .380-caliber handgun was also recovered from the scene.

“It’s shocking, because they were a very sweet couple,” said Lewis Nixon, who lives down the street. “I’ve spoken with them numerous times and they were raising their grandchildren.”

In fact, Nixon told Channel 2 News the grandchildren were at the house when the shooting happened.

“It’s sad,” Nixon said. “We really feel bad for the children, because they are sweet little kids.”

Bailey is now being held in the Galveston County Jail on $100,000 bond.
