Volunteers from across country continue to help storm victims

HOUSTON – The day starts early for thousands of volunteers with the non-profit "Eight Days of Hope" who gather at a nearby local church.

Part of their mission is to bring people together from across the country to help others.

Nathan Locascio, a volunteer with Eight Days of Hope said, "getting down here enables us to get a feel for what these guys went through."

In this case, they're offering a helping hand to Houstonians rebuilding after Harvey.

"To be honest it's an emotional thing when you walk in these houses and you hear the story from the families," said Locascio.

One of the hundreds of family's being helped over the two-week period by the non-profit are the McDonald's, whose home was devastated by the storm.

Andre McDonald, whose home was hit hard by Harvey said, "It was something to get first taste of what it is to be rescued or helped by first responders."

In only a matter of days, volunteers have put up a new roof, replaced Sheetrock and plenty more.

All of it, in an effort to once again make the McDonald's house a home.

"To me it, shows how strong America really is to have somebody come across the country to come up somebody else that they don't even know," said McDonald.

Out of so much destruction -- several months after Harvey hit, people are still coming together to help one another.

Even if they are total strangers.

Locascio said, "When we leave, we can see that these guys are regaining to normalcy."

"Out of everything and what Harvey did and all that to see this right here is unbelievable," said McDonald.
