MANVEL - On Monday, Gary Haynes was just one of the guys on the Manvel High School football team.
By Tuesday morning, his name was being shared in households across America, for a simple video he posted over the weekend on Vine.
"I can't believe it," Haynes said. "My whole life changed in less than five seconds."
The video shows Haynes throwing a Hail Mary to himself and then catching it.
He got the idea after watching a video of Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles doing the same pass and throw. Except Haynes, a wide receiver at Manvel, never expected to catch his pass.
"I was just throwing the ball and I was like, I wonder if i can throw the ball to myself and catch it," Haynes said.
Sure enough he did and luckily one of his friends captured it all on a cell phone video. Haynes posted that video online and the rest is history.
"I wasn't expecting it to go viral like that," Haynes said. "I just expected my friends to see it and that would be all, but then people started contacting me left and right on Twitter and Instagram."
On Tuesday morning his video was featured on NBC's "The Today Show."
Of course, all the attention attracts the naysayers. Even Haynes' head coach, Kirk Martin, was a little skeptical at first.
"My initial reaction was that's not real," Martin said.
So he had Haynes try the pass and catch for himself on the Manvel football field. Martin rolled his cellphone recorder and sure enough, he captured Haynes catching the same hail mary pass.
"If anyone can do it, Gary Haynes can," Martin said. "Because he has a great arm and he can run."
Haynes says he now plans to incorporate the pass and catch into his daily practices.
"I want to get faster," Haynes said. "To be in the NFL, to play college football, you have to have speed and that is what I'm trying to go for."
Haynes says his dream would be to one day play for the Houston Texans, but first he has to finish up school.
The high school junior has already seen interest from the University of Houston and a few other universities.
