Vigil held for murdered Cypress family

Family of four found shot to death in January

CYPRESS, Texas – Hundreds of people gathered Saturday afternoon to honor a family of four found dead in their Cypress home.

The candlelight vigil at the Coles Crossing Community Center was organized by the Houston Chinese Alliance and also brought out law enforcement, politicians and neighbors.

Sheriff Adrian Garcia was among those to address the crowd, urging anyone with information to come forward.

"When violence takes the lives of children, I have no tolerance, I have no patience, and I have no mercy for the people responsible," Garcia said. "I ask you to share in that with me."

Garcia said every available resource is being used to investigate the case, but declined to speak about a possible motive.

The bodies of Maoye Sun, 50, his wife, Mei Xie, 49, and their children Titus, 7, and Timothy, 9, were found on Jan. 31. They had all been shot to death.

Sun worked at Cameron as an engineer. Colleagues described him as hardworking and humble.

Neighbors can't understand why anyone would have wanted to kill the family.

"I think that's the most important thing. What's the reason, what's the motivation?" said neighbor Victor Hung. "Everybody can run wild with their imaginations, but just it's hard to say right now."

Following the vigil, the crowd walked to the family's home and placed flowers and candles in front of the house. Many in attendance didn't know the family personally.

Weihua Li of Katy said he felt compelled to attend, partly because he and Maoye Sun shared a similar path as engineers and Chinese immigrants.

"When we leave our families, our families on the other side of the earth, they care about our safety, if we are safe," said Li.

Anyone with information in the murder of this family is urged to contact the Harris County Sheriff's office or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
