Surveillance cameras captured video of two men stealing a tailgate off a pickup truck parked in the driveway of a home in the 7100 block of Fox Scene in Humble.
It happened just after 1 a.m. Thursday. The crime took less than 60 seconds.
"That definitely wasn't what I was thinking about waking up to," said Louis Ramirez.
Ramirez told Local 2 his wife discovered the tailgate was gone when she got up in the morning to take their kids to school.
"People were just outside messing around with our property, it kind of gets to you," said Ramirez.
Precinct 4 deputy constables said awhile ago tire thefts were a problem in the Foxwood neighborhood; they haven't had many reports of tailgates being stolen and they hope it stays that way.
Investigators say backup cameras have made tailgates even more expensive, leading thieves to steal them and then sell them on Craigslist for a profit.
That's where Ramirez has been looking for his.
"I check Craigslist every couple hours to see if maybe it will show up," said Ramirez.
Ramirez also wants his neighbors to know this happened so other truck owners can protect their vehicles. Police suggest getting tailgate locks or backing your vehicle in so the thieves have a harder time getting to it.
They also said it's important to protect your truck when out in public, especially in parking lots. Backing into parking spots or parking close to buildings can deter criminals.
