HOUSTON – United Airlines said it will honor the $5 tickets that were purchased during a glitch on its website.
"We've reviewed the error that occurred yesterday and decided that, based on these circumstances, we will honor the tickets," United tweeted Friday.
Two economy tickets to Hawaii would normally cost hundreds of dollars, but on Thursday afternoon Sarah Hutto found a pair of round trip tickets from Houston to Honolulu for $15 on United.com.
"I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to move fast enough that it would go away before I got to the end. I was like I don't know if this is real or if I'm dreaming," Hutto said.
She wasn't dreaming. Her colleague, Susan Lopez, who'd been looking to fly to Raleigh to see family, went on United's website and admits she was a little apprehensive when she found two round trip tickets to North Carolina for the same price.
"I was looking for anything that said it was a scam or a set up. I was afraid to put my credit card number in at first but then I was like you know what I'm going to do it," Lopez said.
Katrina Augustin thinks she got the best deal of all on flights to Chicago.
"Fifteen dollars for three people," Augustin said.
A mistake led to a massive sale for a short time Thursday. The website was shut down for maintenance not long after the women made their reservations.
Mary Clark, a United spokesperson, told Local 2, "One of our filings today contained an error which resulted in certain fares displaying as zero. We have corrected this error."
The group of women considers themselves lucky.
"It was real. I got my confirmation number. Thank you United," said Hutto.
Clark tells Local 2 that United is in the process of evaluating whether the airline with honor those low fares.
