UPDATE: Kids found, 1 in custody after car stolen with kids inside in west Houston

HOUSTON – Houston police searched for two kids who were reported to have been in the back of a carjacked sedan Wednesday morning but a couple of hours after the search, a neighbor said he saw the 11-month-old and 2-year-old playing just a few feet from their apartment in west Houston.

"The kids didn't say anything. I just gave them something to eat," said neighbor Renee Thornton.

The incident happened at around 10 a.m. Wednesday in the 11000 block of Westheimer at Royal Oaks. Houston police say a woman left the children in a vehicle and that's when a thief drove off with the car and the kids still inside.

Police were searching for a white Toyota Corolla and eventually found it at the Westchase Ranch apartment complex in the 2200 block of Hays.

Sky 2 aerials showed officers taking one suspect into custody.

Police say the two children were missing for about two hours, but were found safe playing in the playground at the Arcadia at Westheimer Apartments on Panagard Drive around 12:15 p.m.

The mother of the children is under investigation and police are questioning her about what happened.
