GALVESTON, Texas - An unusual sight to see, that is a K-9 being lowered from a helicopter.
But it's not just the K-9s being lowered from an MH-65 Dolphin, it's their safety gear. Each K-9 is outfitted with safety goggles and ear protection.
The Coast Guard tells Local 2 that the dogs were being lowered from a height of 30 to 50 feet, to a waiting boat, to simulate real-life situations, that they could face in the Gulf of Mexico.
This training exposes the K-9s to loud noises as well as the motion of the helicopter, while searching for bombs. The Coast Guard tells Local 2 that there are 14 K-9s enlisted in the program.
