UH football player kicked off team after drug arrest, officials say

GALVESTON, Texas – A University of Houston football player was kicked off the team after he was arrested on a drug charge last week, according to officials.

D’Aundre Holmes-Wilfork was one of four people in a car that was pulled over Wednesday after the driver ran a stop sign in Friendswood, according to court documents.

According to the documents, the officer who stopped the vehicle smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car and asked the driver to hand over the pot. The driver handed the officer a small zip-close bag with marijuana inside and a water bottle that had been converted into a bong, according to the documents.

A backpack belonging to Holmes-Wilfork was also found inside the car, according to the documents. A large glass container with marijuana inside and a bottle containing codeine was found inside the backpack, according to the documents.

Holmes-Wilfork was charged with possession of a controlled substance of more than 200 grams but less than 400 grams. His bond was set at $10,000.

Holmes-Wilfork played safety for the UH Cougars.

The school’s athletics department released the following statement Tuesday:

“We are aware of the situation and D’Aundre is no longer a part of the Houston football program.”

It was not immediately clear if the other people in the car were facing any charges.
