KPRC2 Anchor Keith Garvin spoke with Rice about her time in the spotlight.

As the lead singer of a local band, Rice has already released an album, but the Houston resident is not taking anything for granted as she continues to perform on the biggest stage of her life.

"The experience has been the most humbling thing I've ever been a part of," Rice said.

The UH grad has been wowing show watchers for the past seven weeks -- battling her way to this week's round of the final 12.

Keith talked to Stephanie via Skype from Los Angeles about how she's earned her way to this part of the journey.

"I think what sets me apart from other artists is the same thing that sets everyone apart from each other. And it's my individuality and I don't try to sound like anyone else,” Rice said. “I don't try to have any sort of limitation. I’m just showing what is real and true to me."

Raised in East Texas Rice moved to Houston to attend college and graduated with a degree in biology.

She became the lead singer of a local band, but credits her years as a student for leading her to The Voice.

"UH really helped mold me into the person that I am today,” Rice said. “I was able to form really close connections with a couple of professors who kind of just took me under their wing and saw this potential in me and really set me on the path of doing medical research, which is what I was doing before I was on The Voice.”

And now she's looking for the winning formula to hopefully become the latest Houston-area talent crowned the voice. For that, she's leaning on her adopted home.

"I need all the motivation and inspiration that I can get and I've been showered by so much love and support from Houston," she said.

Rice said her ultimate dream would be to tour performing music while also being a part of research projects across the world. But for now she's staying focused on Season 12 of The Voice.
