Man watching fireworks killed by stray bullet in SE Houston

HOUSTON – A 43-year-old husband is dead Thursday after a stray bullet hit him in the head in southeast Houston.

Family members said Javier Rivera and his wife, Erika Rivera, were watching fireworks around 1 a.m. on their front lawn on the 800 block of East Lake at Theta Street near Edgebrook.

Investigators said someone shot a gun in the air and the bullet came down and hit Rivera in the head.

"Suddenly she (Erika Rivera) looked to the side and he was on the floor, she saw there was blood on his head. She ran back inside and she screamed 'Call 911,'" Rivera's niece, Yarelo Carcamo said.

Family members and neighbors performed CPR but it was too late. Rivera died at the scene.
