HOUSTON -

This week is National Child Passenger Safety Week; and safety groups say parents in the Houston area need to listen up.

A recent study by the Texas Transportation Institute found nearly 40 percent of all Houstonians are using child or booster seats incorrectly.

Texas Children's Hospital, Safe Kids Greater Houston and AAA Texas are hosting a free community car seat check Saturday, September 21, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Houston Community College West Loop Campus at 5601 West Loop South. The event is free, but space is limited. Parents can call Safe Kids Greater Houston for more information at 832-822-2277.

Additional events are scheduled for Child Passenger Safety Week and a full schedule can be found on the Safe Kids website.

The Texas Department of Transportation has started free, year-round child safety seat inspections available by appointment. To schedule a safety seat inspection, find your local contact at TexasClickItorTicket.com.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office also offers car seat safety checks at all of its community storefronts.
