Thousands lose power after driver hits pole in deadly crash

HOUSTON – Thousands of people were without power Friday night after a driver slammed into a wooden power pole.

It happened around 8:45 p.m. as two people were speeding south on Airline Drive, police said.

According to reports, the driver lost control of his pickup truck near Airway Drive, and it skidded sideways before crashing into a power pole next to the road.

The force of the crash was so intense, police said, it split the pole in half and knocked down several electrical wires, knocking out power to residences and businesses in the area.

The driver of the truck died at the scene; the passenger was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

The name of the victim wasn't immediately released.
