Twin girls found nude, neglected in home, says Liberty Co. Sheriff's Office

Sheriff's office says room contained only single blanket, smelled of human waste

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas – Child Protective Services has taken custody of two-year-old twin girls after they were allegedly found naked and locked in a bedroom of a Liberty County home. According to the Liberty County Sheriff's Department, the room contained only a single blanket and smelled of human waste.

The sheriff's department said it was called to a home in the 200 block of County Road 2283 Saturday morning by federal probation officers who had gone to the home to check on the girls' mother, who is awaiting trial on a human trafficking charge.

The probation officers said the woman wasn't there, but her sister, Amy Castillo, allowed them into the home. While inside, the officers heard scratching coming from a door leading to a bedroom.

After getting permission from Castillo, the double locked door was opened and the girls were found inside the room.

According to the sheriff's department, EMS crews examined the children at the scene and found them to be in satisfactory physical condition.

Castillo, 27, is facing charges of child abandonment and endangerment.

The sheriff's office said the girls' mother also arrived at the scene during the investigation and told them she had only been gone for a short time. They have submitted a probable cause complaint to the Liberty County District Attorney's Office and are waiting to hear whether charges against the mother will be accepted.

A neighbor said she was shocked to hear about the allegations.

"As far as I know, she's a great mom," said Amy Chamness. "I don't know what happened. I've been gone all day and I show up at the scene and there are cops everywhere."

Chamness said she sees the girls outside playing all the time and they often play with her own children.

A spokesperson for CPS said the two girls will be taken a hospital to be checked out and then placed in a foster home. The agency will be asking a judge to sign an emergency removal order on Monday.
