Gert becomes the second hurricane of 2017 season

HOUSTON – Gert has become the second hurricane of the 2017 season.

The National Hurricane Center said that Gert was located near latitude 31.2 north, longitude 72.3 west. Gert is moving toward the north near 8 mph (13 km/h).

A turn toward the northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected late Tuesday or Tuesday night.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 986 mb (29.12 inches).

The administration initially predicted that the ocean could see anywhere from 11-17 named tropical storm systems this year.

The 2017 hurricane season officially began June 1 and ends November 30.
