Houston Fire Department evacuates area; evacuation order now lifted

HOUSTON – Officials say a part of southeast Houston was evacuated after a train derailed Saturday evening. That evacuation order has since been lifted.

The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. at 6400 Sherman near Oldham Street in southeast Houston.

Hazmat crews are currently on the scene awaiting officials from the company that owns the train.

The Houston Fire Department evacuated five blocks around the derailment site while they assess the situation.

Investigators said the train was carrying mixed cargo, and that a total of five cars derailed.

One train tie did catch fire during the derailment, but it was quickly extinguished by emergency crews.

There is no word yet if any hazardous chemicals are on board.

No injuries have been reported.
