Homeowner struck by ammunition when fire breaks out at northeast Houston home

HOUSTON – A homeowner was shot by his own bullets when a fire broke out at his northeast Houston home.

Firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the home on Everglade Drive and Thorn Street around 1 a.m. Officials believe the flames sparked inside the man's bedroom.

Ammunition that was stored in the room went off in the intense heat, hitting the man in the chest.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition.
