Toddler accidentally hit by mother with vehicle dies in hospital

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – A 2-year-old girl hit by her mother, who was backing out of a driveway, died in a Katy hospital, the sheriff says.

The accident happened around 11 a.m. Thursday along FM 1463 at South Firethorne Road.

Sheriffs said the mother and her daughter were visiting the mother's sister at the time of the accident. According to investigators, the mother was moving the vehicle out of the driveway to make room for the kids to play. As she was backing out she ran over the 2-year-old.

"When the mother was backing the vehicle out of the driveway to park the vehicle in the street, the child approached the vehicle and then was struck," said Fort Bend County Sheriff, Troy Nehls.

Deputies said a construction worker in the area heard the accident and gave the child CPR until emergency crews arrived.

The child was taken to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital where she later died.

Marty Becker works from home and says he saw the commotion and came outside to find out what happened.

"I saw a lot of traffic going down the street, just made the assumption it was something else, would never suspect this," says Marty Becker, aneighbor.

He says this neighborhood is filled with young kids who are constantly playing outside.

"I have a granddaughter and I can't even imagine what the family is going through, words can't describe that one," says Becker.
