Tire shop employees come to customer's rescue during robbery

CONROE, Texas – A group of tire shop employees in Conroe jumped into a life or death struggle when they rescued a customer during a robbery.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at JR Tires at 12822 Highway 105 W, near Lake Conroe.

"Here, customer service is No. 1 and we're going to make sure our customers are safe all the time," Manager, Christian Martinez, said.

Martinez and other employees called police and joined in the fight to protect a 43-year-old man, who had just exited the shop to discover his car being broken into.

The man tried to stop the suspect.

In the surveillance video, the suspect, Carey Neil Ervin, 29, was armed with a knife during the struggle. Ervin had targeted the customer and followed him from a nearby bank after he made a cash withdraw, police said.

Ervin broke into the customer's car when he thought the coast was clear, but it wasn't, police said.

The crime is known as "Jugging."

Most of the incident at the JR Tires was caught on their surveillance video system.

It took several minutes and several men to detain Ervin until police arrived, officials said. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The customer and the tire shop employees were not seriously injured during the altercation.

Ervin, appears with cuts and bruises in his mugshot.

Police said Friday that Ervin's accomplice, the driver of black sedan or a Nissan Maxima with temporary plates, had not been identified.

Anyone with information about the case, is asked to call the Conroe Police Department or Montgomery County Crime Stoppers, 1-800-392-7767.
