Things to do in Houston during Memorial Day Weekend

If you are staying local and not planning to drive to a beach or the Hill country, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor happenings around Houston during the holiday weekend.

The Houston Symphony Orchestra is presenting 'The Cosmos: An HD Odyssey' through Sunday at Jones Hall. The symphony will perform Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 set to images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Single ticket pricing starts at $35. 


The Miller Outdoor Theater offers free performances all summer, and this weekend's concert is no different.  'Dancin in the Street: Motown Revue and More' will take listeners back to Hitsville with performances Friday through Sunday. 

Memorial day weekend may be your last chance to take a spin through the past at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's 'Sculpted in Steel' exhibit. The exhibition features classic cars and motorcycles from the Art Deco era. The exhibit is open through May 30 with tickets costing $23 for adults. Children under 10 get in free.  The ticket includes general admission to both buildings of the museum. 

 

 

More free music is on tap at City Centre where the Summer Tribute Concert Series kicks off Friday. A ZZ Top and Fleetwood Mac tribute band are among the performers that take the stage through Sunday. 


NRG Center is the place to be for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans.  The "Heros in a Halfshell" are just some of the characters appearing for photos at the event which goes through 6 p.m. on Sunday.  Kids under 10 get in free with any adult ticket.

Woodlands Fireworks Celebration

The Woodlands is hosting a free celebration featuring fireworks each evening at 8:55 p.m. at Town Green Park. 

Memorial Day Parades and Ceremonies

The Cleveland fire department has a parade on Monday starting at 9 a.m. with a flag retirement ceremony.  Ceremonies for fallen service members will take place around the country at all of the national cemeteries.  At the Houston National cemetery the service will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Sugar Land will hold a memorial day ceremony and tribute beginning at 10 a.m. at Sugar Land Memorial Park.
