LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas -
"It just made me sick to look at," said Moss Bluff Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief John Wilson. "It's sad to see that people do things like that, as hard as we work for the community."
Chief Wilson reported that among the stolen equipment was four VHF radios, three light bars from the top of the fire trucks, solid brass fittings from fire hoses, sirens and a generator.
Wilson said his small group of volunteers spent years raising the money to buy the equipment that's now stolen.
"It's probably close to over $200,000 worth of damages it would take to replace equipment that these firemen have bought out of their own pockets," said Liberty County Sheriff's Dept. Capt. Ken DeFoor.
DeFoor said the thieves broke in through a metal panel on the side of the Moss Bluff Fire Station.
"It is absolutely unbelievable that someone would come into a fire station and steal equipment that is meant to save lives and property," DeFoor said.
A fire truck belonging to the Hull Daisetta Fire Department, also being stored at the facility, was stripped too.
"These vehicles in there now are totally immobile," said DeFoor. "They can't move now and this department is dead in the water."
Both the Moss Bluff Fire Department and the Hull Daisetta Fire Department are each posting a $2,000 reward for a total of $4,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this burglary and theft.
The investigation is continuing and the sheriff's department is asking that if anyone has any information regarding this offense or has knowledge of the whereabouts of the stolen fire department equipment to please call the Liberty County Sheriff's Department at 936-336-4500.
The Moss Bluff Fire Department is also accepting donations to P.O. BOX 1986 Liberty, TX 77575.
