HOUSTON - The Shlenker School second graders raised money to donate more than 100 new bears to the Houston Fire Department.

Those bears are placed on HFD EMS units to comfort children during emergencies. Each bear comes with a special prayer inside to help comfort the recipient.

The students also made a donation to MEDILIFE of Houston in honor of the four fallen HFD firefighters and those injured in last year's tragic Southwest Inn motel fire.

For more than a dozen years, the second-grade class at the Shlenker School have held read-a-thons to raise money and purchase stuffed animals from Build-A-Bear Workshop.

Firefighters Thursday thanked the students for the bears.
