Traffic violation leads to brief police chase

HOUSTON – A routine traffic stop in east Houston escalated into a short chase and ended with the driver's arrest.

Around 12:20 a.m. on Friday, an HPD unit attempted to pull over a Ford Taurus for a traffic violation on Fidelity Street at North Carolina Street.

However, police said the car's driver took off and turned down De Haven Street, not realizing the street was a dead end.  The officer stopped behind the car at the end of the street, drew his weapon, and ordered the driver to exit the car.

Instead of getting out, the man pulled into a driveway, turned the car around, and tried to go past the police car.  According to reports, when he did this, he hit the front corner of the police car and got stuck.

The officer took the driver into custody at the scene.

Police said the man faces aggravated assault on a peace officer and felony evading charges.
