Thousands served at Christmas Eve Big Feast

HOUSTON – As you prepare your family's Christmas Eve meal, there are many in the Houston area who have nothing to put on the table.

That's why hundreds of volunteers gathered Tuesday at the George R. Brown Convention Center to serve hot meals to more than 25,000 people at the 35th Annual Christmas Eve Big Feast.

"It started with a group of people who just wanted to serve the community and make sure people had a happy holiday. And it blossomed into much, much more," said Stephanie Lewis, director of the Christmas Eve Big Feast.

The volunteers are serving everything from turkey and dressing, to sweet treats like peach cobbler and apple pie.

Volunteers are serving more than food at the annual event; they are helping families with all of their holiday season needs.

"We'll have clothing given away today, shoes, household items, warm jackets, coats and sweaters, as well as toys for the children," said Lewis. "It's our goal that every child who comes today gets at least one new toy."

The event started at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.
