Thief caught on video trying to steal statue from Heights home

The owner is hoping someone recognizes the man who tried to steal the 200-pound statue

HOUSTON – A neighbor in the Heights is hoping someone recognizes the would-be thief who tried to steal a 200-pound statue from her family's home.

"It's really heavy, so he couldn't carry it," said Noemi Rivera.

Home surveillance video shows the would-be thief as the culprit.  Sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning he tried to lift it up, but quickly gave up.

It's hard to make out his face, but they're hoping someone might recognize him because this isn't the first time they've had an unwelcome visit from a thief.

"This would be the third one. The first time, they took my husband's van. Another time, a couple months ago they broke into my truck and took the stereo," said Rivera.

Some of her neighbors have also fallen victim.

"We've had a couple of neighbors complain about someone stealing things from the lawn and sometimes it's piece by piece," said neighbor Charlotte Price.

For Rivera, she and her family say they're planning to move somewhere else.

"It's really hard. It's a nice neighborhood. People are really nice. We've been here for almost five years and we're definitely thinking about it's not safe anymore," said Rivera.

If you think you've seen this person or have any information, you are asked to call Houston police.
