The most super of 'supermoons' rises this weekend

HOUSTON – The biggest ‘supermoon' of the summer will rise over Houston this weekend!

The astronomical event, due to arrive on Sunday night, happens when the moon becomes full on the same day as its perigee, when the moon's orbit is closest to the earth.

The phenomenon results in a larger, brighter moon. In this case, sky-watchers can expect the moon to look 14 percent bigger and shine 30 percent brighter.

If clouds obscure the view this weekend, another supermoon is expected to rise on September 9, though it won't be quite as large.
