Texas Southern University lifts band suspension

Officials: Band will play at Oct. 27 game

HOUSTON – A suspension of members of the Texas Southern University marching band has been lifted after officials said they concluded an internal investigation.

A TSU task force handed down penalties against members of the university's Ocean of Soul Marching Band who were involved in hazing. Last week, 10 upperclassmen found guilty of hazing were immediately banned from the university until at least January and lost their band scholarships. Nine freshmen were given letters of reprimand, but were allowed to keep their scholarships.

The band will also begin an anti-hazing outreach program.

Officials with the hazing task force said the band will perform at the Oct. 27 home game at BBVA Compass Stadium against Grambling State University.

School officials said the decision means the band will also play for homecoming, its parade and a Nov. 3 home game against the University of Arkansas.

The task force also approved the band's participation in a competition in Austin.
