Teen boy home alone hides during home invasion

HOUSTON – A teenager was home alone when someone kicked in his back door, but that brave boy came out ahead and he told Local 2 about his daring escape.

"They probably knocked or rang the doorbell for about 40 times," said Bryan Vanegas.

The eighth grader knew something was wrong when someone would not leave his front porch. He was home alone getting ready for school and when he looked out and says he saw a black Ford Explorer parked in front of his house on Bexley near Leawood in southwest Houston. He says one of the robbers motioned to someone out front.

"He went back. Gave them a sign. He went like that -- to go to the back," Vanegas said.

That's when he says the robbers used a chair to climb over the fence and around the locked gate. He says they then kicked in the back door.

"He broke it open. He saw me. And that's when I went to my room, moved the dresser and came out through there," he said.

He put his dresser in front of his bedroom door and crawled out the front window, then ran to a neighbor's house to call for help.

"I really didn't think this was going to happen. I thought it was just going to be a knock. No one home. But no. They were waiting to break in. It was practically planned. They don't just go to the house like that," said Vanegas.

He says the thieves took off with a game console, a watch and a TV. Vanegas got away safely.

His mother is proud of her 14-year-old son. But she says she wants people to hear his story and stop thieves from stealing from the people who work hard and pay for their belongings.

The men who broke into the home have not been caught. Houston police are working to get descriptions of the men.
