Students mourn 14-year-old hit, killed by car

No charges filed in case yet

SPRING, Texas – Some middle school students are dealing with the loss of a classmate days before their school year ends.

Ana Sanchez, 14, died after she was hit by a car on Louetta near Kuykendahl in the Spring area about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Sanchez was walking alongside a friend, Mauricio Mendez, who was riding a bike, when they were both hit. Investigators said Sanchez died instantly. Mendez was hospitalized in stable condition.

Before Sanchez and Mendez were hit, Harris County sheriff's deputies said they received several 911 calls that a person was driving erratically in the area.

Sanchez was in the seventh grade at Strack Intermediate. Before they started classes on Tuesday, students and staff held a moment of silence in her honor.

"Students are wearing blue because it was the last color she wore," classmate Oscar Martinez said.

Grief counselors were at the school to help the students and staff deal with Sanchez's death.

School officials said students and staff are signing a yearbook to give to Sanchez's family.

Detectives said they suspect the driver was intoxicated at the time of the incident. Results of a blood test have not been released and no charges have been filed yet.

Sanchez's family said they donated her organs.
