Spring High football fans met with increased police presence at game

Officers were inside the stadium and Harris County sheriff's deputies patrolled the parking lots

DEER PARK, Texas – Students, parents and fans attending Friday night's football game at Abshier Stadium were met with an increased police presence because of the stabbing incident at Spring High School on Wednesday.

The Spring Lions varsity team traveled to Deer Park for the game.

A Deer Park Independent School District spokesperson told Local 2 they were adding officers inside the stadium and having Harris County Sheriff's deputies patrol the parking lots.

More security was added to the visitor's side of the stadium, where the Spring students sat, because district officials wanted them to feel comfortable and safe.  They said they did not anticipate any problems.

"I think it's overkill," said Perry Irchirl, a Spring High School parent.  "I don't think it's necessary, I think it was just an isolated event with some kids fighting."

"It's a good idea," said Sara Alvarado.  "Checking around and be ready.  You never know what happens."
