Sleepy SUV driver runs into northwest Houston bank

HPD: Driver fell alseep just before crash

HOUSTON – Houston police were called out to an unusual scene Friday morning, after an SUV ran into a bank.

Around 5:00 a.m. Friday, crews were called to Bingle Road and West Little York Road.

Police said a black SUV was lodged in the side of a Chase Bank building.

Investigators said the driver had just worked a late night shift and fell asleep just before the crash, then lost control, drove through the lawn surrounding the bank and hit the side of the building.

The SUV left a large hole in the building and caused a small jet of water to shoot from the broken sprinkler system.

Brian Rauch, a bank customer, said, "Should be surprising but it happens more and more these days. Not enough responsible drivers on the road."

Officials said the bank was not able to open because of the damage.

The driver of the SUV was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out. He was expected to be okay.
