LEAGUE CITY – League City is under its most severe water rationing plan after a private contractor installing power poles hit a major, 24 inch water line near Hewitt and FM 270 Wednesday.
The water line was quickly turned off.
"It's going to affect everyone," said League City Spokesperson, Kristi Wyatt. She told Local 2, "Because we're needing people to conserve so we have enough water for the entire city. And also for those emergency services like our fire services. We don't want to be in a situation where there's not enough water to fight a major fire."
League City workers and experts from Dallas are working to fix the pipe.
There is steel on the inside and concrete on the outside.
The fix is not expected to take more than a couple of days.
Wyatt said, "Anytime we enact this level of drought contingency plan, this is our very strictest and highest, it's because we are concerned about public safety and we want to make sure that there's enough water to go around."
League City's Stage 3 Drought Contingency Plan includes:
- Irrigation of landscaped areas is absolutely prohibited.
- Use of water to wash any motor vehicle, motorcycle, 4-wheeler, boat, trailer, airplane or other vehicle is absolutely prohibited. Commercial car washes that utilize water recycling are allowed to continue to operate.
- Use of water to wash down any sidewalk, walkway, driveway, parking lot, tennis court, or other hard surface area is absolutely prohibited.
- Flushing of gutters or permitting water to run or accumulate in any gutter or street is absolutely prohibited.
- Washing down any building or structure for purposes other than immediate fire protection is absolutely prohibited.
Ignoring the water rationing plan could cost violators $500 a day in fines.
