"We always monitor children. It's a common practice that classroom teachers monitor children for illness. So for us, it's part of what we do normally," a spokesperson from the Houston Independent School District said.

As an extra step of precaution, groundskeepers will remain vigilant in removing standing water and preventing mosquito breeding grounds.

Parent Deshaun Washington said she couldn't help but think about the West Nile threat while preparing her first grader for the first day of school on Monday.

"What can I do except spray Off on them? What else is there to do? And that's what the problem is," said Washington.
