Power outage closes Kolter Elementary School in Meyerland

Students were bused to nearby Johnston Middle School

HOUSTON – A power outage has caused the Houston Independent School District to shuffle kids at an elementary school to a nearby middle school.

HISD called parents of Kolter Elementary Schootl students late Thursday morning alerting them of the power outage at the school.

"We got a phone call about the electricty going out"
said Polee Love.

"I got a call saying there had been a power outage and to pick him up here," Claudia Bosschaerts said.

CenterPoint Energy said the outage was pre-planned maintenance, but unfortunately impacted the elementary school in the Meyerland area.

Kotler students were bused to Johnston Middle School and remained there for the rest of the day.

"It always affects families, but it is not a normal thing to happen so the schools handled it very well and they were very professional," said Cindy Ruiz Mansfield.

"They were very organized, they called us, I came here and got him in less than 5 minutes, very organized," said Bosschaerts.

District officials asked parents to pick their Kolter students up at the middle school, which is located at 10410 Manhattan, at the end of the school day.

Students who normally ride the bus were dropped off as usual but all after school activities for Kolter students were canceled for Thursday.

CenterPoint said crews were working to fix the problem. The outage was affecting 53 customers.

We're told Kolter Elementary will be back open for Friday's school day.

Parents with questions should call 713-726-3616.
