HOUSTON – A man was hit and killed on the East Freeway, and now Houston police are searching for the driver or drivers who hit him.
Family members told Local 2 Thursday the man who was killed is Tommy Andrew Miller, Jr. A local musician and devoted dad who leaves behind a beautiful family.
It was just before midnight Wednesday when police said the 28-year-old victim lost control of his car. He ended up crashing near the McCarty exit ramp on a grassy area.
But what happened next had crash scene investigators puzzled.
"For an unknown reason, the driver exited the vehicle and walked across the grassy median and onto the mainlanes of the freeway where he was hit by one or possibly more vehicles," said J.D. Rossman with the Houston Police Department.
None of those cars stopped to help the man, which is against the law, according to police.
Part of Interstate 10 was shut down for hours while police collected evidence at the crash scene.
Detectives said they hope that evidence will help them track down the driver or drivers who hit the victim and left him to die, but at this point police says there are no known witnesses.
"She was his high school sweetheart," said Constance Davis, Miller's mother. "They have been together all these years."
The couple had three children and had just announced they were expecting a fourth. Davis says their family just wants to know what happened and hopes the person who hit and killed her son will come forward.
"I just want to know what happened," Davis said. "I want to know what happened to my child."
Police said Miller got out of his car and was attempting to cross the freeway, the family wonders if maybe he was going to get help.
