Patriot Guard member killed in motorcycle crash on I-45

Woman and her husband were driving to Ellington Field for arrival of fallen soldier's body

CONROE – Two members of the Patriot Guard were involved in a fatal accident on their way to Ellington Field Thursday morning.

Official said around 7:15 a.m., Conroe police were called to accident on Interstate 45 at Gladstell involving a Ford F-350 truck and a Honda trike motorcycle.

According to witnesses at the scene, Conroe police said the driver of the pickup truck had either stopped or slowed significantly due to heavy traffic related to an earlier accident. The driver of the motorcycle not able to stop and slammed into the back of the truck. 

Police said the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were both tossed from the trike.

Officials said passenger, 62-year-old Sue Powell, died as a result of her injuries. The driver, 61-year-old Marion Powell, was transported to Conroe Regional Medical Center in critical condition. 

The Powells were on their way to Ellington Field to help escort the body of a soldier back to Pasadena as part of the Patriot Guard.

Officials said the Powells were involved in another fatal accident on Interstate 45 in October.
