Nov. 17: Changes ahead for the DA's Office

HOUSTON – Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson is a guest on this week's Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall. Anderson is finishing her second month as D.A. After being appointed to fill the position after the death of her husband in August.  She says she is continuing to implement programs that will continue to improve the DA's office on many levels.

After the recent deaths of two students at a house party, one man was arrested and charged, then released the next day. She talked about how that process works and the challenges to make sure the right person is behind bars.

"You have to be 100% sure you've got the right guy in the court room." she said. "You have to live with yourself. You have to look at yourself in the mirror the next day."

She also talked about how the D.A.'s office will continue to change under her leadership, and how citizens can get involved in that process.

Also on this week's program, the Covenant House Texas which works to provide shelter for children who are homeless in Houston. Ronda Robinson is the Executive Director and CEO of Covenant House Texas and has been with the organization since its inception in 1983. She talks about the great progress they have made in helping children get a better start in life and about the "Sleep Out" taking place on Thursday, November 21.

The Sleep Out is designed to give executives a sense of what it feels like to have to sleep outdoors, and to call attention to the need for organizations like Covenant House Texas. Also joining Khambrel is Tom Kurz, Vice President of Sysco Corporation and a member of the Covenant House Board of Directors.

"Reginald" is a 19 year old who is now a resident at Covenant House and tells how became homeless, how the Covenant House came to his rescue with a place.
